Chris Khoo has taken an active part in the development of the specialty of Plastic Surgery in Britain. He was a member of the Council of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (when it was the British Association of Plastic Surgeons), from 1991 and returned for another term until 2010. He was President of the Association in 2005.
He served twice as Secretary of the Section of Plastic Surgery of the Royal Society of Medicine, and as its President. He was a member of Council of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. He was an examiner for the FRCS(Plast), and served as Chairman of the Intercollegiate Board in Plastic Surgery of the Royal Surgical Colleges of the UK and Ireland.
He is a member of The British Society for the Surgery of the Hand. He was a founding member of the British Association of Surgical Oncology/British Association of Plastic Surgeons Interface Group in Breast Surgery.
He was on the Committee advising the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, on the implementation of government policy on the regulation of cosmetic surgery in the UK and was Chairman of the Royal College of Surgeons Aesthetic Surgery Project Committee. He was Chairman of the Academy of British Cosmetic Practice (ABCP). He was a consultant advisor to the NCEPOD report “On the Face of it” 2010.
He served on the Joint Committee for Higher Surgical Training (JCST) Training Interface groups for Breast, and Reconstructive Cosmetic surgery. He was the British delegate to the Union Européene des Médecins Specialistes and to the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, and an examiner for the European Examination in Plastic Surgery. He was also a member of the European Society for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Executive Committee, and a member of the International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons Executive Committee (as Geographical Representative for Europe). He has been honoured with the fellowship of the Hellenic Society of Plastic Surgery. He was Chairman of the Organising Committee for 12th Quadrennial European Meeting of the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery 2014, in Edinburgh. He is also a member of EURAPS, the European Association of Plastic Surgeons, and a UK delegate to the International Confederation of Plastic Surgery Societies, chairing the Organising Committee in Montevideo in 2016.
He has served on many NHS committees, both at a local and National level. He was Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the Thames Valley Nuffield Hospital, and HRH Princess Christian’s Hospital, and a member of the committee which formulated Clinical Governance policy for Nuffield Hospitals. He is on the Executive Committee of the Hospital Consultants’ and Specialists’ Association and has been awarded the HCSA’s Honorary Membership. He is Vice Chairman of the Federation of Independent Practitioner Organisations (FIPO), and an appraiser for FIPO Capps, the FIPO Consultant Appraisal Service. He has been involved in the profession’s response to the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) independent healthcare rulings, and serves on the FIPO-COAG and PHIN Expert Reference Group. He has been on the board of the Private Patients’ Forum.
He served on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and he was a Trustee of The Healing Foundation, the national charity established to champion the cause of people living with disfigurement and loss of function by funding research into pioneering surgical and psychological healing techniques, and is still an Honorary Member. He has been honoured with the award of the Fellowship ad hominem of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Chris Khoo was High Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire 2014/15, and continues to serve as Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire.
He retired from clinical practice on 31 March 2017.
